For information on the rules of rockhounding in Washington and for a list of rockhounding clubs go to the sate Division of Geology. Washington States rich Mineral history comes from the fact that the oceanic crust is being submerged underneath the state. This has caused a number of volcanos to rise in Washington through the years, as the water from the oceanic plate causes mantle to melt and rise up through the crust. Rockhounds in Washington can also find minerals that where formed thousands of miles away carried by the moving oceanic plate these islands rocks got scraped up onto washingtons shores. Washington has also once hosted the Yellowstone Hotspots Lava Flows, along with a number of glaciers which have all contributed greatly to the States wonderful geology. |
